The Kaspersky Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition has become a reality for Ms Sophia Pang, a 36-year old mother of three along with the rest of her eight-member team and they owe it all to IT security firm Kaspersky Lab. They had approached the firm through its Singapore distributor and the entire team instantly received a generous sponsorship for their upcoming expedition to Antarctica.
The women will be skiing over 900 kilometres in approximately 40 days throughout the entire expedition and are expected to reach their final destination on 1st January 2010. They will be flying to the Antarctica on 12th November for a few days of acclimatisation before commencing their great expedition to the South Pole.
Ms. Pang believes that the strength of the team lies in its diversity. “The reason of the trip is to bring women from all sorts of different places, all sorts of different backgrounds, all sorts of different religions. We are so different (and) that really allows us to put an extra effort to make sure that we are able to or want to understand each other and be tolerant about it,” she says.
To reach the South Pole, the team will have to endure blizzards, crevasses, and extremely cold temperature conditions. The eight brave women from Brunei, Cyprus, Ghana, Jamaica, Singapore, India and New Zealand will be the first from their respective countries to ski to the South Pole. The expedition is in conjunction with the Commonwealth’s 60th anniversary and aims to inspire women worldwide.
We wish them all the best!
