Microsoft moved a lot of install disks, but hardware makers got a bigger bump two years ago

When Microsoft (MSFT) launches a new operating system, as it did two weeks ago, PC manufacturers like Hewlett Packard (HPQ), Dell (DELL) and Acer are supposed to reap the benefits. And everything seemed to be in place on Thursday Oct. 22 for that to happen.

But PC makers didn't make out quite as well. Although they had a relatively strong week, with unit sales up 49% year over year and 95% from the week before, it was nothing like Vista's launch in Feb. 2007. Then, sales soared 68% year over year and 170% from the week before.

In a press release issued Thursday, Baker explained what happened:

“A combination of factors impacted Windows 7 PC sales at the outset,” Baker wrote. “Vista had a slight advantage at launch, as January traditionally has a bigger sales footprint than October. The other hurdle Windows 7 faced was sales of PCs with older operating systems (XP and Vista) were high, making up 20 percent of sales during the Windows 7 launch, compared to just 6 percent of older operating sales during Vista’s launch week.”

Ironically, it was the computer manufacturers who did best in Feb. 2007. Sales of new PCs with Vista pre-installed were up 67% the week that Vista launched compared with the same week in 2006....

Perhaps most people rather buy a few games than buy one fancy OS, either xp or vista still working fine and can play all games, load all software. Now a day people are more money conscious than before lor.

for vista many people had to buy new pcs or components to run vista smoothly.
win 7 runs like charm on old machines, so "why buy a new computer if my old one runs the new OS?"

More like they sold more Vista copies with PCs, then Win7.

my point was that more people are actually buying a retail version of the OS rather than a whole new PC with the new OS, so there are not as many new PCs with win7
just my opinion...

There are just so many factors and way to look @ this situation. I strongly feel m/s needs to get the confidence back from consumers and ditch xp support once and for all.

I disagree with that. I saw in a few forums people using old machines for windows 7 got a lot of problem. Some computer hang after a few hour, some monitor can't get video signal on next turn on or awake from sleep mode etc. These computer work perfectly fine with vista and xp, so can't be hardware problem.

Because a company with hundreds of millions of customers and probably millions of different hardware configurations aren't going to have some problems? Time to get realistic about this. With millions of different hardware configurations you are bound to expect some people to have compatibility issues.

I have installed Windows 7 on quite a few old workstations with absolutely no problems (old P3 and P4 Hardware) and many cases feels faster than XP.
