Nvidia: Data on Fermi's gaming features "forthcoming" VRNews Nov 21st, 09, 11:27 AM #1 (permalink)
Despite constant rumours that Nvidia is focusing on the potentially lucrative HPC industry with Fermi - rather than gaming - company spokesperson Bryan Del Rizzo dismisses such rumours as "unfounded" and "ludicrous". "Gaming remains our bread and butter focus area. However, there are other opportunities for us to explore as the company grows, such as the HPC sector," explained Del Rizzo. The reason why all details on Fermi so far points towards a focus on compute processing rather than gaming graphics is probably because the two events that have covered Fermi - GTC and SC '09 are both compute oriented. Del Rizzo insists Nvidia have still not revealed "a lot" of details about the gaming capabilities of Fermi. More next page.

I still do believe that the Fermi will be a good 30% faster than Cypress, but the problem is that not only are the features forthcoming, but also the Fermi itself. Nvidia is getting too late and the market needs their presence!

looks like they're focusing all their efforts on GPU acceleration outside of gaming, most likely because of intel entering the market with their Larrabee soon. With another giant coming in to the gaming market, nvidia is doing the right thing and branching out to other technologies, although they could lose a huge chunk of market share if Fermi doesn't perform, or takes too long to be released.

I would say both have been innovating in terms of pushing for better performance and IQ. Issue now is how well will this Fermi perform, and most importantly, what is the price we would expect from them since it really seem like a highly complex chip at this point in time. If its 30% better in performance as compared to a Cypress, it still has a Hemlock to compete against. Thus, it has to be priced right as well. But from the features that they are pushing out for its Tesla market, its likely we will see them pushing the product out at a high price even to retail consumers like us. The argument for them will be, AMD don't have it while we do.

By the time GTX 385 comes out, the PS4 and XBOX 720 will be out, so these consoles ports will be awesome!

I doubt the new consoles will be out anytime soon. Looking probably at 2011 or later since the current ones still seem to do well for most console gamers.

And you "believe" this magic 30% based on what evidence?

Yeah..foolish to think that some of the Fermi-cards would actually beat HD5870 in gaming

Gut feeling!

Come on. It's Nvidia we are talking about here. They might be the b'tards they are, but they know their graphics.
