NVIDIA "Fermi" GPUs Delayed Yet Again NextGen_Gamer Feb 19th, 10, 10:38 AM #1

Like I start a lot of my news postings here on VR-Zone, I have to say that this is not a rumor, it is an official confirmation by an NVIDIA executive. The upcoming "Fermi" GPU core will only be massively available starting in NVIDIA's Q2 of FY 2011. NVIDIA's Q1 of FY 2011 runs from January 31st, 2010, to April 30th, 2010. That means that products like the GeForce GTX 480 and 460 will only become truly available in May at the earliest. It is likely that NVIDIA will go ahead and launch the "Fermi" generation sometime in March or April, but with only extremely limited quantities of cards (much like SemiAccurate said in a very recent article). One more full quarter delay and suddenly "Fermi" will be competing with AMD's upcoming "Northern Islands" GPU generation...

This follows the early expectations that Fermi would launch in late November/December but wide spread availability wouldn't occur until a month later in January. Things are the same, only four months delayed...

The real worrisome part is the apparent gap in nVidia's line up. They have nothing to fill the price and performance gap between the G92b and Fermi. GT200b cards have effectively been discontinued.

Well, if it's delayed anymore, NVIDIA might just call it the GTX580

This "news" got official right after a positive Q4 eqrning from NVIDIA. Coincident? I think not.

Well I wouldn't be in a hurry either to bring out new products when I could still sell 3 generations old stuff to the OEM market thus making money out of them by simple rebrands.

Ehh, thanks, I guess.

You do realize that as it stands, Fermi will compete against AMD's Northern Islands, not Evergreen anymore, right?

From what I read around the web, ATI sold 20 Evergreens for every single Geforce, during Christmas time.

20:1 ratio goes beyond bad, don't you think?

Also in my local forums, whenever a thread for suggestions for a new gaming graphics card, comes to life, virtually noone suggests Nvidia cards anymore. Not even Nv fanboys. This is bad for the market's balance!

Nvidia has found themselves in a check-mate position and even launching GF100 high end cards, will not do them much good. They need new products top to bottom!
