It's at it again: Nvidia rebrands yet more GPUs bigsale Feb 24th, 10, 09:56 PM #1

Finally, after months of waiting, Nvidia has announced that two of its Fermi chips will be released at the end of March – but, to sate eager customers, the Californian firm has been busy churning out some new parts.

Except that they’re not new in the strictest definition of the word.

Instead, Nvidia has merely rebranded some of its older chips with bigger numbers for the benefit of OEMs – and to the detriment of people who’d naturally think that a GT 340 was more capable than the GT 240 or a GTX 295. Presumably, it’s an attempt to eke as much cash out of these older cores before the much-delayed Fermi arrives.

Take, for instance, the GeForce 310, which is the same part as the GeForce 210 and, consequently, uses the same GT218 core. Nvidia has even used the exact same picture for both of these GPUs on its website.

The GeForce 310 has been around since November 2009, though, and so Nvidia has partnered its sole GeForce 300-series chip with four new parts. The GeForce 315 shares the same GT216 core with the GT 220, and the GT 340, the most powerful part of this “new” series, appears to be the GT 240 with a new sticker – after all, both these parts share a virtually identical specification.

The GeForce 315 and GT 340 sandwich a couple of parts which can trace their lineage back even further. The GT 320 and GT 330 both used the G92b core, which was also used for the GTS 240 and GTS 250 and, before that, was used – albeit with small tweaks – to power four GT 100-series parts, all of which were OEM-only.

The G92b and its variants are even older: six parts in the GeForce 9000-series used this chip, with the oldest making its debut March 2008.

Remarkably, that wasn’t the first appearance of the G92 core, which was introduced way back in October 2007 inside the 65nm-based GeForce 8800 GT – a card that was quick at the time but has evidently aged badly: its score of 26fps in our High-quality Crysis benchmark is now almost tripled by the likes of the ATI Radeon HD 5870, which scored 66fps in the same test.

So, that’s the same core, tweaked, revised and reduced, for almost two and a half years. It’s no surprise that ATI has entirely taken over the A List thanks to its Radeon HD 4000 and HD 5000-series chips, which have consistently innovated.

In the meantime, though, these rebranded parts are OEM-only and aren’t likely to appease any customers who have grown weary of Nvidia’s stagnant strategy in the run-up to Fermi’s release. If you’re as confused as us about the origins of some of Nvidia’s latest GPUs, we’ve put together a handy flow-chart illustrating the origins of the G92 – after all, we’ve had plenty of time on our hands.

Its amazing that ATI continues to churn out "new" and "revolutionary" GPUs and still not pull away from nvidia in performance.

Perhaps ATI have been playing the renaming game too?

Well yeah you can get HD4870 performance levels with half the TDP, DX11 support and EyeFinity by buying an HD5770. That would require a hell of a good sticker job.

You're right... but performance doesnt change. Just some new bells and whistles.

Its like 2 equally fast sports cars but ATI's car is smaller and has a stereo system built in. In the end people still care about the speed.

I do agree its nice to have DX10.1 and DX11 before nvidia but to be honest... how many games are there that actually support these features? By the time such features are mainstream, nvidia will have their corresponding DX11 part out too.

I'd like to see ATI actually pull ahead in performance. After all they've been releasing new GPUs all the time compared to nvidia's renaming right? So how far ahead in performance are they now?

Perhaps ATI is actually taking its time adding bits and pieces to each GPU revision and making it look like a totally new GPU. So physically ATI can claim to have a new part.

Allow me to remind Computerbase's 5870 results!

How is the 5870 not pulling ahead? What are we expecting really?

There are those HD5800 cards available since last September you know.

GTX285 is shipping around 390USD, the HD5850 and the HD5870 go for 299 and 399USD. The HD5850 is around 30% faster, while the HD5870 is around 50% faster compared to the GTX285 at 1080p with 8xAA.

Did you lived under a rock until now ? sisn't the 5870 the fastes single GPU CARD ? isn't 5970 the fastest video card ever ? in the GTX260/4870 zone didn't ATI made 5770 ? a tiny card with the same performance ( stock ) compared to the huge GTX260/4870 cards , plus dx11 wich can be seen in dirt 2 and Alien versus predator 3.
If that rebranded 8800GT gets to 40nm and overclocks well then i wouln't mind the rebrand , if it stays the same DX10 card on 65/55nm then Nvidia is in trouble.
They can't buy all the reviewrs and they can't influence all the forums in the world , no matter how many paid undercover people they have on forums to spread the propaganda.
Wonder if you are one Entropy , how can you say a 5000 series ATI is rebranded ?

It's true! I took the heatsink off my 5870 and it was just a little hamster running around in a wheel. I was very disappointed.

8800 GT-> 9600 GSO -> GTS 150 ->GTS 240 -> GT 330

So we'll see G92 in GT 420 and G 510

ATI annihilated NVIDIA completely in this DirectX race... Their ENTIRE lineup is out and fully available even before Fermi is paper-launched. If you think Cypress and Hemlock don't "pull ahead" with performance, I'd gladly present you with plenty of facts.

Fermi at this point doesn't really matter anymore. It's gonna be expensive. A huge die with confirmed yield issues doesn't cost nothing. Its PCB will be expensive with the wide bus. It uses more GDDR5 in the default config. Anyone that expects a miraculously cheap Fermi is simply expecting just that, a miracle.

I'd like to see what glasses you're wearing, they seem to distort reality when it comes to objectively evaluating NVIDIA. Maybe you have too much ... emotional attachment to the green camp?
