In Stalker test HD5870 and GTX470 would pretty much equal, but in Far Cry 2 DX10 bench (with 2560x1600 + 8MSAA) GTX 470 takes pretty big lead. Perhaps it would be different story if there were 2GB version of HD5870..

it's very sad if this is true , the lead for the big resolution is atributed to the more memory GTX470 has , so Ati can launch a 2gb version ( wich they said they will ) and problem solved , if rumors of Fermi being slightly faster than 5870 becomes a reality then bye bye chances of Ati droping prices.

Dont think this "tests" true in first place
Second - more memory? LOL - 280mb more memory hardly has real advantage,so its down to another factors (again,if tests true)
And all those rumours that exactly gtx480 gonna compete with 5870 - now it appears that its slower and cheaper (hopefully) gtx 470 manages win vs 5870 or on same level - how it can be sad?

And knowing Nv,they drivers after month or so will get better for new architecture,for those Fermi's - just remember whats happen when Nv launched new G80 architecture - even they own 7900GX2 winning vs 8800GTX at that time.
Still,waiting proper and official tests

Yeah..they haven't got release drivers ready so performance should go up from this.

My 8800 GTS 640MB first lost against 7950GX2 in performance, but with later drivers 8800GTS won. 9800 GX2 was initially very close to GTX 280 performance level, but nowdays GTX 260 192SP wins GX2.

They didn't cripple those old cards in these cases; new cards just tend to receive huge performance increases with driver updates.

For a graphic card that stayed so much in development i think they have some good drivers for it.
Also , because drivers got better year after year on both sides (Ati and Nvidia ) you can hardly see any improvements in performance for games that are on the market for some time , mostly bug fixes that slow down the game.
Take crysis , Nvidia choped good performance with one driver and then after 2-3 releases a new driver that said to improve perf. like 10% , in reality the 6 months driver worked perfectly and had great fps in crysis but for some reason newer ones choped it and then give it back like it never was ( 10% improvement or bulshit like this ).
I know this for a fact from the days when i had my 8800GTS , i had to stay with an old driver because the newer one wans't better.
On ati's side is the same deal , they too said perfomnace will go up to some % degree in crysis , i tested and to this day i got 1 fps better , so after 20 drivers or more and the performance of my 4850 is still the same as the oldest and first driver Ati released for this card , except 1 fps more of course

What you see now is what you get , don't think drivers will make this card go much much faster overall , maybe a bug fix in a new game , maybe a 1% after months of tweaks , stuff like that.
Now the bench , i don't know if this is true , catalyst 10.3 ? from where ?

While i would agree testing farcry2 at 8xAA while give a slight disadvantage to ATI, a win is a win and its good seeing the second tier (crippled) geforce better the top radeon single card. But i would like to see results at 1920 x 1200 4xAA where most people will be using.

Also look at Hawx results in adrianlee's thread. Radeons card are very strong in Dx10.1. and ttis game is not vram limited for 1gb cards at 2560x1600. The gtx470 almost matches 5870 in avg fps and beats it in min fps!

We waited 10mth for the 4890 and it cannot beat a gtx280. It only betters a 4870 by 10% on average. 4870 -5870 is 16mth and only beats it by 60%. 5850 came six months after gtx285 and only barely beats it. So this while this is somewhat late and dissapointing it is not worse than what Ati delivered in the past.

jimmichi , ati cards brought prices down , they forced Nvidia to sell GTX260 , make gtx275 and sell them cheap , i wanna see Fermi doing that , problem is they are not bringing prices down.
They want to bullshit us with 1-2 games with physx and the hope some applications will run on GPU , i'm still waiting for some usable GPU encoding from Nvidia.
Not knowing i was under the impression Ati doesn't do very good in doing anything else than games , well some little applications from sourceforge changed my mind , take Media Player Classic Home Cinema , Cpu usage is like 0-1 % with this media player , take AMD's plugin for adobe premiere pro for encoding that uses GPU.

I merely showed it isnt unsual for both companies to make small performance increments over a long time based on objective facts. Lol you cant put forward any substantial argument and started callng others idiots.

jimmichi , people expected more from Nvidia , they expected another G80 wow , not something a little better than Ati.
Why people expected more from Nvidia ? because Nvidia has the biggest market share by far compared to Ati ( discrete ones ) and they assume the all mighty character.
If this is all Nvidia can deliver then i see market share more evenly divided bettwen Ati and Nvidia , and fanboy's not having the arguments to defend Nvidia so much , you know how Nvidia fans talked about Fermi , they said it will kick Ati's ass very bad.
