9 coffee brands removed for having toxic content
THESE coffee labels may boast 'viagra-like' effects but might end up poisoning you instead.
Malaysia's health authorities have removed as many as nine coffee labels from store shelves for having toxic chemicals, reported Berita Harian Malaysia.
Datuk Che Mohd Zin Che Awang, director of the health ministry's pharmaceutical department, said these brands were identified after complaints from the public and further investigations by its officials.
The affected brands include Kopi Pahlawan, Coffee Hari2-mau Power X2, Kopi Tenaga Tok Lebai Plus, Jamu Tenaga Lelaki and Bio Trim BTB.
Tests on these brands revealed high levels of sildenafil.
Another batch of coffee powder - Tai Guo Feng Nu Yang, Xinggannulang and Saoguafu - contained sildenafil and tadalafil.
Both chemicals are used to treat erectile dysfunction but require proper prescriptions and are to be consumed in controlled amounts.
Among other things, these coffee brands boast stamina and high energy for their consumers.
SIDE EFFECTS
Still, Datuk Mohd Zin issued a warning: 'Though the presence of these chemicals may seem small, if taken daily, it can lead to dangerous side-effects, even death.'
He added that investigations also showed that a brand of sweets called Mentalk has shown unusually high amounts of tadalafil.
In May, Singapore's Health Sciences Authority had warned the public against consuming this candy after discovering an undeclared chemical substance, aminotadalafil.
