KOTA TINGGI: A 17-year-old girl's discomfort over an alleged peculiar treatment administered by a dentist led to his prosecution for outrage of modesty.
The girl claimed that Dr Kanniappan Thiruvengadam, 54, had allegedly touched her breast, supposedly to treat bleeding in her braces.
At the magistrate's court yesterday, Dr Kanniappan, who is from Jalan Mawai, Kota Tinggi, was charged with using criminal force with intention to outrage the modesty of the girl.
He allegedly committed the offences on two occasions between September and December last year between 10am and 7pm in the treatment room at his clinic in Jalan Tun Sri Lanang, Kota Tinggi.
Dr Kanniappan, in a dark navy blue blazer and pants with tie, looked calm when the charge was read to him.
Deputy public prosecutor Rashidi Abd Rahim proposed bail of RM10,000 for Dr Kanniappan, who is also the MIC Pengerang division chairman.
Kanniappan's counsel R. K. Menon however urged the court to impose bail of RM5,000 considering that the accused was a prominent dentist with a 20-year practice in Kota Tinggi and had a family to support.
Magistrate Mohd Fadlee Mamat fixed bail at RM6,000 pending hearing on July 20, Aug 7 and Aug 17.
