Well, then again it can't be also the case where the warranty starts once the laptop leaves HP. If that was the case wouldn't shops who have stocks of HP's laptop having to offer the laptop at only 7 months warranty because it spent 5 months in a storeroom?

buyer/shops will send out the warranty card. they will want your reciept as proof of the date of purchase when you send your laptop for repair.
(that's why they have this clause - "mail the warranty within 7/14 days of purchase" on most things u buy) but usually they'll still give you the warranty if you have date & proof of purchase.
if you buy direct from HP, then the date of delivery will mean the commencement of the warranty.

for mobile phone wise, it also applies to it.
most people dun fill in the particulars cause when they sell off the phone, the buyer can still claim the warranty.

from where you won it from, if it's a buyer, someone had paid HP for it and gotten a reciept for it.
if it's won from HP, its more obvious that they have already started the warranty the day it's sent out or reached your hands.
