Try the shut down option from the start menu... is there a standby button?
Try pressing the shift button..... it might change to hibernate option... Hold shift and click on it to hibernate
If not have to enable in some powermangement or somewhere inthe control panel..... that's what i know for my desktop....

Open control panel
Click on Performance and Maintance>Power Options>Click on Hibernate Tab>Check on Enable Hibernation

Please note that if your notebook has a lot of ram then when u hibernate it will take up the space of ram on your hard disk. for eg i use my notebook for example your com have 512MB ram so it will talke up 512MB of hard disk space for hibernation
