Soooo...now what? DaGamer!!! Jul 25th, 09, 10:59 PM #1 (permalink)
Hey guys, sorry to ask this but I am kind of curious as to how things stand as of now. Has the ODEX thing blown over? Or are they still tracking people who DL animes? What about paid sites in the US or whatever? Sorry if this has been covered before....guess I'd had my head buried in the sand for a while. Kind of curious as I dun mind paying to DL anime LEGALLY....

Crunchyroll. Go get yourself a VPN tunnel endpoint in the US of A and watch all you want.

Afaik you can legally dl from Crunchyroll since they have distribution rights of sorts. Have to purchase those copies tho.

Hey, thanks for the replies guys, I think I have some understanding of the matter....so ODEX's still being a bother, eh? Oh well, guess I'll just watch for the time being.... The anime I'm most interested in are Naruto Shippuuden and Bleach, gotch these two I happy liao.

Edit - BTW, XTimX, my gfx is obsolete liao dah, in light of the awesome present gen nV and ATi cards. But I'm still happy with their performance so it's OK.

Here's the million-dollar question:

Does VPN help protect your privacy? (Not in relation to crunchyroll.)

In other news, I think BayTSP is now actively targeting foreign users.

In relation to P2P over VPN,

The whole idea is being difficult to persecute. Would you go after those requiring additional legalese spanning multiple countries, or those out in the open who are easy pickings?

You'd need to take a court order to a multimillion dollar VPN services company whose very own business is customer privacy to gain access to records they may or may not keep.

After you get access to any records they may have, it is an uphill task taking action back to the individual countries in the case of foreign subscribers; Those countries' legal systems may or may not support your actions. The paper trail is further blurred if the foreign subscriber uses a "traceless" media like western union to pay for the account.

In short, too much work for returns that may not materialize.

I'd rather go after that college student sitting unprotected in his dorm room, or that elementary school kid downloading stuff in clear from his room.

DF

Edit: btw I am in no way suggesting that you use VPN to breach copyright laws and MDA filters. This was posted for technical/sociological debate. You are free to refute my POV anytime =3.

Speaking of which, I think I'm somewhere in the middle...

The users that do not have properly setup torrent clients fare the worst, unencrypted traffic.

LOL no matter what encryption you use, the honeypot method of grabbing IPs will always be able to grab your IP.
