AMD locks them up... Weapon Nov 13th, 03, 02:49 PM #1 (permalink)
just in case anyone missed the recent not-so-good news, it appears that AMD has locked the multipliers on the latest batch that is now on sale all over the place. anything that is post 0339 is potentially multiplier locked but some seem to have slipped thru the gaps and still have unlocked multipliers.

for a more complete rundown of the info, including some stepping info, check this thread:
http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showth...0&pagenumber=1

btw, the wire trick will not fix this, nf2 mobos will not unlock them, etc.

this is a hard lock and it appears that no one has figured out how or even if it is possible to unlock them.

it appears that the Thortons are locked up tight as well.

the FX51's still seem to be unlocked.

I am off to search the local shops for what might be the last of the unlocked Bartons.

well, there are still some of the barons that are pre 0339 out there - I found a few at the local shops today. Granted, the local places do not have spectacular prices on them but it might be the last chance to get ahold of an unlocked barton.

still no magic unlock for this one...

HMMM thas wierd, I got an athlon xp 2400+ 0340 from a local computer store and it int "hard locked', it does have the cut bridges but my mobo unlocks most of the multi's neway . It seems to overclock just as well (if not a little worse) than my 1700+ DLT3C, Ive looked at 4 of the same cpu's from that store and they all have the burnt bridges, assuming that the ones with burnt bridges get automaticly unlocked by some boards. Im not sure what the stepping is but its somthing like AIXHB(too lazy to look). For me, the bartons being completly locked is fine cause 11 multiplier is perfect for me, just set the fsb at 220, and its a normal overclock for the 2500+ anyways(2420mhz).

a few have slipped thru -- the tbred are apparently not a victim of locking as they were all finished before AMD started locking them (i.e. they are no longer in production)

the locking nonsense seems to be bartons and thortons. there are still a few that are up to week 0342 that were not locked but that is a gamble. anything before 0339 seems to be unlocked. 0331 is definitely unlocked.

the odd part about the new ones is they are locked in a different way -- the bridges appear to be intact but they are locked up like a mutha and the pin trick doesnt unlock them either.

if you want a multiplier unlocked barton 2500 or any other unlocked barton - get to the store now. new ones are locked.

here, the local stores here were already pre-jacked on their prices -

I could get a retail 2500 for $91 from newegg or a OEM 2500 for $85 but the local stores only carry the 2500 retail and after tax it would be $133

for $10 more, I could buy the xp2800 barton from newegg and it will max out at about the same even if the multiplier is locked. The bright side about ordering over the net is there is no sales tax.

maybe someone will find a way to unlock these new ones before long...

Personally, I would have prefered what AMD was doing with the A64s rather than the Intel route.

At least with the A64s you still had the ability to lower the multis but not increase them past the default multi.

It would have saved them the money from all the 2500+ -> 3200+ conversions and would have at least kept some of the o/cers community happy.

Just purely hardlocking them is sad, but at the end of the day, I believe AMD as a company has changed a significant amount with the release of the A64.

As a consumer, I think its sucks if they do/did..............................but just curious.......
If you were a local store 0wner, and knew this info, wouldn't you jack up the pice ?2

I bought a 2500barton in early july.....daYum, it just dawned on me.That I have had the cpu for 4months:hat3: Well anyho0o0o I got some feed back and input on some of the better steppings on the bartons then. Then I went out to buy one.I hit up 5 different venders checking steppings on the 2500's till I found one with the stepping I was looking for.Paid $85 fot it no sales tax. Then I was happily off , on my way back home to see how it oc'd. Got it to do 2.3 stable so I was pleased with it. But now the cpu sits sealed in a box.I almost sold it a month ago, but a certain someone advised me to keep it. thank You Gracie !

Now I'm really glad I kept it after seeing this "thread." I wont be buying a barton for myself since i have one not being used. But this does Bum me out that the new ones , you can't unlock

well, at least the FSB is OCable. you can still get 2.2 out of almost any barton 2500 by kicking the FSB to 200mhz on an nf2 mobo. that still puts it at xp3200 speed. some bartons will still hit 210mhz fsb with just air cooling so take that for what it is worth...

for $85 it is still one hell of a deal.

Its good to hear that. I've gone through 3 Bartons all of the same stepping and I just recently sold one. In effect I saw little difference clock for clock between them and my earlier Tbreds except for certain operations like encoding and some simulation runs I did. But it wasnt a drastic change.

But I'll say this, they are hardy little buggers. I chipped two of them all to hell and they were still perfect at default speeds and voltages. One of them had a small chip and was still good up to 2.5GHz.

Anyhow, back to Tbreds for the time being

the solution for core chipping problems will be on the market soon.
The shim I designed is down to the final stages. It still holds its title as the only one of its type that can be sealed under the insulation of almost any extreme cooling solution, provides mega core protection and can produce a decent gain in cooling performance even with air cooling.

when it is 100% ready to go, I will put up a new thread in here.

Good to hear. I had to fabricate my own plastic shim for my Bartons to be placed in my Vapo back then. Worked well enuff.........sorta
