8800 GTS. can I do this? manthus Mar 12th, 07, 06:04 PM #1 (permalink)
I am using a XFX one and the heat is horrible. I can feel it on the side casing.
So I was thinking the opening slit (circle red) was the source to the heat escape. Safe to cover it up?

I would also duct tape the edge of the card cos it didn't really fit in nicely to the casing.

IMO, it's ok.

I believe those vents (circled in red), are meant for alternative or "fail-safe" exhust, just incase the main exhust(rear) is being blocked by something.

As for duct taping the "gaps" of the housing, Id say it's also ok. But I recommend using UHU Glue, Hot-Glue, Epoxy, Silicon Sealant, or any other gap-filling liquid/gel form adhesive.

but ah........ I got a feeling that after doing all that sealing, it won't benefit much.

Just a feeling.

Well, not really a risk to try anyway.

the better alternative is adding a pci slot fan right below where the red part is at

hmm.. might be because there is not enough CFM from that blower to exhust the heated air fast enough outta the exhust.

If that's the case, then I think the vents are meant to "spread" some of the heated air out of the heatsink fin's area before the heated air conducts more heat to the fins than blowing the heat away from the fins.

Is there any way to remove the xfx face plate and try mounting a fan directly on the heatsink?

Much as well rout the air out of a 3rd pci slot with a fan if u can afford to loose one pci slot.... i think xXProfessionalXx did something like that... u check with him...

yes i agree with the suck air out from bottom

or some just use cardboard duct below open grille region out thru an open pci slot.
if u tape up, fastest fan speed will see some benefit perhaps

u wont be able to mount the fan properly... the fins are very thin are are rather flimsy... cause they arnt soldered to the heatpipe i believe... i go home and check my hs.. but i remember seeing gaps between the fins and heatpipe.... but anyway... might as well wait for a 3rd party cooler to come out before doing any mods to ur fins...

But also the stock fan is a delta blower... quite powerful stuff... 1.4A i think... or was it 2A... cant remember... i go home and check that also... but if u got air tight seal for ur ait air to exhause out of the case u will get better temps...
