parallel p4 system setup help darkzephyrin Jul 15th, 03, 10:46 PM #1 (permalink)
At the moment i am running your basic p4 3.0c. The software
I am writing simply requires a lot of cpu time. However, it is
easily divided into multiple independent threads. Since the 3.0c
supports hyperthreading, this allows me to run 2 threads at once
with a significant increase in performance. I am wondering
whether it is possible to connect 2 seperate motherboards each
with its own cpu and memory together in a master-slave
configuration ( The master would have access to the hard disks
and I/O devices, while the slave would merely be a motherboard,
CPU, and memory ) in order to achieve performance similiar
to having 4 processors.

If anyone has ever tried this, please let me know by either
posting here, or sending me an email at kawkat@rpi.edu

a second option darkzephyrin Jul 15th, 03, 11:11 PM #2 (permalink)
The second option would be to use a motherboard that
supported 2 cpu's. Although I have not been able to find a motherboard that supported 2 p4's one might exist. I have seen
multi processor xeon motherboards, but what I am doing simply
doesn't warrant that.

Is it possible to create something similiar to the linux's
"beowulf cluster" with win-xp machines?

For linux, was that a beowulf cluster? How difficult was
setting it up under linux? And would you be willing to help
me figure how to set it up ?
