qns on thermal throttling user_manutd Oct 9th, 06, 12:57 PM #1 (permalink)
a few problems here hope u guys can help...
i oced my gfx card to the max and temp hits ard 75deg..
sometimes during gameplay the screen hangs for a while and then continues.. n i exprerience a drop in framerates
upon checking wif rivatuner i discover the core working at 2D speeds in 3D applications... restart game oso no use.. forever running at 2D speed.. unless restart com..

is this because of thermal throttling?

in a bid to end this problem i editted the bios and reflashed the bios wif my desired core/mem speeds at 2D and 3D.. but this thing still happens!!

is this bcos the temp is too high?

ps: i cant the section on Throttling in bios using nibitor.. its blank and cannot be changed

1. Did you use rivatuner to set 2D Clocks ?
2. If ans to 1 is yes, then force constant performance of 2D clocks.
3. If you don't want to do 2, then you set your clocks to 3D mode before jacking up the 3D clocks. Then set constant performance to 3D clocks.

I don't think the temps are too high. 80C should be the threshold limit.

ATI Cards tend to Thermal Throttle a lot higher than Nvidia Cards...

The average load temp of a X800Pro was about 80C...tip a bit of OC on that...you will see yourself with something close to 100C...Nvidia back in those days was no where close with their 6800Ultra

you can't look at it this way? does it mean that i keep my gpu below 60c i can o/c to 900mhz core??

throttling kicks in at any temp if the gpu can't do the speed u force it to do whether it is due to lack of voltage, cooling, whatever reason.

This is one of the LARGEST misconception I've seen pop up every time.

Agreed with Shamino. I experiment with my card with good cooling but still pause when clocked above the maximum with no increase of GPU voltage. Its the same with CPU overclocking where increase in voltage + sub zero cooling = higher clock.

You can run freely downloadable benchmarks like 3dmark.
