1st Time OC-ing AMD, feedbacks needed jowy_ham Oct 30th, 09, 03:22 AM #1 (permalink)
Specs :
AMD Phenom II X3 720BE (4th core unlockable)
Biostar GA790GX XE, BIOS = 080014, Dated = 15-Jul-09
GSkill 2 x 2GB DDR2-1000 (Official specs : 5-5-5-15 @ 2.0~2.1V)
HSF : Noctua U12P with Delta 120mm x 38mm fan (running on 7V instead of full blast 12V)
FANs : On NB and Mosfets
HDD : 1TB WD GP
PSU : Seasonic 430W Modular
OS : Win 7 Prof

Currently running 17 x 200 = 3.4GHz @ 1.344V with 4th core unlocked (CPUZ Version 1.52)
RAMs running at 800 instead cos there is only 800 and 1066 settings (running at 5-5-5-15-24 2T)

HT Link & NB = 2200MHz

HWMonitor (version 1.14)
TMPIN0 min=90C, max=95C
TMPIN1 min=32C, max=33C
TMPIN2 min=41C, max=44C

Able to clear IBT 5 runs with max ram used (IBT version 2.3)

Now running Prime95 (64 bit)

Questions :
1. Is there anything else that I can do to OC higher ? anything else to tune ?
2. Any ways to bring down the temps further ?
3. Why is the TMPIN0 always at so HIGH ?

1. At that volts, max you can go is 3.5ghz but still depends on cpu. if you need to go higher, need more volts. HTT you can stay @ 2000mhz and NB can go higher for a little more performance but you might need to add more volts to cpu-nb vid

2. use a better hsf or lower volts

3. If tmpin0 stays the same during load and idle, you can savely ignore it

you can try running 250mhz ht to run your rams @ 1000. keep htt @ 2000. your cool n quiet might not work when ht is change though

1. i believe u can, but due to weak pwm, u better keep vcore < 1.4v for long hours stress. 3.5GHz should be doable w/ < 1.4v. ram can be pushed further more as i think it's capable of 1066 w/o sweat.

2. yes, check d contact of nb cooler w/ nb. load temp for cpu is ok but nb temp > tmpin0 (iirc) is way too high. it should be hovering around 50~60'C only on stock cooler.

3. same as above.

hope this helps...

Shrek has a point there, u can always use d handjob to check nb by physically touchin it...

i guess your cpu cooler is loose ????
TMPIN 0 should be your cpu temp !
mine idle @ 37-40C full load(prime95) @ 57-66C
stock HSF

i'm using 720be @3.1ghz 4th core unlock with stock voltage 1.325v

NB Temp = ??? I didnt specify leh

NB is the 1 near to the back panel, rite ? that 1 is cool to touch, not even warm cos I have 2 fans blowing at that area.

Screw very tight liao leh.

TMPIN0 = CPU Temp ? then very weird readings leh.

The rest of the TMPIN1 & 2 is idle at 30+C and on load at max 45C

Is there a tool that does a proper reading of the CPU Cores Temperature ?

you can try amd's overdrive software to see whether it can help. or maybe u need to update the bios too.

FYI, I had investigated the GX XE TMPIN0 issue in the other thread so search for it.

does your heatsink get warm? If it does then its fine but if its still cool then somethings wrong. You could also try taking it out and checking if there is a nice and even thermal paste print on the CPU. If its even it should be fine too.

your cooler should more than enough man. I use the slightly smaller version of yours the U9B with my 720BE @ 3.6Ghz and it maxes out at 50C. Yours should be even cooler since is a bigger version. With that said maybe your extra unlocked core is probably raising the temps or messing with them. There is a reason why it was locked in the first place. Some may have very minor defects you will not notice but some may be seriously faulty.
