Project: VF700 Revived... Nashaz Sep 14th, 07, 07:10 PM #1

Ok, basically this project is like a rough guideline as to refurbish copper heatsinks, i got an old vf700 i got from one of the forumers here for my 7600gs... (special thanks to him... =D)... but I didn take much pics on the process but rather have taken pics on the result of each process... p.s.. i couldn seperate the copper from the slu as the bolts were too tight to take apart... i broke one alen key trying to take it apart... (-.-")

n e way, heres the hsf when i got it...

STEP 1

i used an unorthodox method to do the initial cleaning, usually most ppl would just soak it in coke or something, but i used brasso like cleaning solution, just spread abit all over the hsf, and used a brass bristled brush to scrub it in between all the nook and crannies... then left it for a few minutes and then washed it off with some mild soap and water (need soap cause of the oil base nature of brasso, but make sure u use mild soap so it doesn react with the copper or any of its remaining by products)...

sorry, but i forgot to take a pic of the result of the hs after this process, but mainly most of the black residue on the hsf was gone and the copper became abit lighter...

STEP 2

Now just coke it making sure only the copper portion makes contact with the coke... dun let any aluminium come in constant contact with the coke while soaking... as for this hsf i let it soak for about 20min each time rotating the hsf about 4 times 90 degrees so that all the copper would react...

this is how it looks like

You can roughly make out the the coke level at the side where the fins are more closely spaced and shorter... u can see that the fins are a caramel colour while the copper near the aluminium mounting is lighter...

But as u can see in the picture below, coking turnes the copper abit pinkish...

STEP 3

I then lastly used a dremel with the steel brush attachment to "colour" off the last layer of copper.... but using 2000grit sand paper will also sufface though will take awhile longer to finish...

However, because of the steel brush, the bottom where the copper makes contact with the gpu, has been damaged... some alu has been fuzed onto the base... almost 1/3 of the base was now coated with alu... so no choice i have to lap the hs...

This is after lapping with 1200grit...

and after installing in my test card to ensure everything was ok...

Sidenote

I also coked the alu parts but did it seperately...

Summary....

Before and after...

diluted abit after spraying onto the hs... alu shd be fine... but if an hs is pure alu, as in alu heat pipes u can just coke it entirely... however... some hses use copper pipes that are nickel plated or copper base that is also nickel plated.. that one im not sure how it will react... need to do some testing 1st but i dun have any hs to test on...
