Project: Big Blue Machine static369 Jan 5th, 09, 04:22 PM #1 (permalink)
Hi guys. This is my very first project log. Basically what will be here is the transformation from my CM5 mid tower casing to a Lian Li A70 full tower casing. I was amazed by the sheer size of it. Can't wait to start. All comments are much appreciated.

Before you guys ask me why is there a lian li hdd cage in my CM5, I broke/bent/destroyed the original hdd cage for the case. So i bought this to replace it. Plus i scratched the internal sides of the lian li hdd cage quite badly. because of CM5 locking mechanism.

My new casing!

Took out the hdd, power and the usb ports all out. Need to be sleeved.
I found some old sleeves which i bought from SLS years ago. But the sleeves are "transparent" Any idea where i can good sleeves. I know i missed on bro Froze MO for the sleeves.

This casing comes with 6 120mm fans. Will be replacing 2 or 3 of the stock lian li fans with my zalman fans. How much of cable sleeves do you guys think i will need? Thanks...

Wow! Thanks for the info. Any idea how much the price is like. And how long must i get. i've got about 10 fans to sleeve plus the usb, firewire and power switches to sleeve.

This is my first ever full tower case. I never seen a power switch cable and usb cables so so long

Bro Froze and Bianco, thank you a lot for the TJ07 offer. Too bad i was not able to join the club. I was thinking of spending the $$$ on hdd. Plus i fell in love with this casing when i saw crossover's rig. He is also using the same casing. But the "engine" is totally different. Haha...

Thanks for the help guys...

I think i like abt those MDPC-X n LHS-X (given by Bianco) sleeves is that they are shining black.. whereas those from TechFlex are rather.. matt black.

i forgot the price... and i didn't keep the receipt! but i remember getting double digit lengths.

usually i have an allowance/budget of:

1.5 feet per fan, (24pin & 8pin) atx and pcie wires
2.0 feet per front panel cables
1.0 feet per sata cable

then just go round it off to a nice number to have some extra just in case.

Some minor updates guys. Went to SLT today morning. Bought the sleeves from LHS electronics shop. Was charged $2.50/m for 5mm & $3/m for slightly bigger diameter sized sleeves. They were the best sleeves I ever saw. Only had problem finding the correct size heat shrink tubing. Also came across another shop selling sleeves at the basement. $1.70/m. I bought 1 meter to see if it was the same quality, but it was 'cheapo' ones. After taking a closer look, it was flat. Sleeves from LHS were round all the way.

Some pics i took today,

The 2 different kind of sleeves.

Sleeved fans.

My mobo mounted on the tray.

The old CM5 casing. Served me well for 2 years.

Thermal paste left on my quad core........

......and on my good ol' Si-128

Will need to sand down the surface before fitting it back on....

My Room & Bed transformed to Workshop. Need to clean it up now if not later no place to sleep

not quite skilled in putting heatsink/block on cpu too...
but from the pics you posted, it looks like the heatsink was aimed a bit too much on one (lower) edge of the cpu. maybe you can try aiming more at the center and avoid having it slide anywhere while fastening it to the mobo.

i read somewhere also, you can try to mount it first, then remove see how the contact was. then re-mount and adjust accordingly based on the first try.

I get the heat sink in the center. But when i plug in the clips, thats when it moves the heat sink around.

1 more qns. Where to get sleeves for sata cables?
OR rather, where to get black sata cables?

haha. yeah bro... same problem i had with true120 and cnps9700... but not much with waterblocks... lesser weight to wrestle against i guess.

lhs have those... the bigger size one. i don't remember the size.. but for techflex, i used 3/8" ones. for the black sata cables, try uvnium.
