[Project Log] Melodious Redbox fusionmkx Jul 21st, 09, 11:20 AM #1 (permalink)
Hi everyone, here's another short worklog of mine after several friends and bro's here requested for it. =) It's a simple modding project, no watercooling done for a client of mine.

The request was one of asthetics requirement but no hardware requirements. Hence I chose the cheapest possible components, just suitable for some office documents, and internet surfing and such, a simple core2duo would suffice.

My client came to me with a very unique request and I believe it's one of it's kind here. She wanted a computer to match her LG home products, namely the LG-fridge and washing machine. So I went out and did some research on how these appliances looked like.

The project seemed simple enough, so I got a Lian Li A05B casing for it. It's fully aluminium, small and compact enough to suit my client's requirements, and easy to manage and paint.

Well it's time to strip the parts away and prep the panels for painting, the process was simple enough, the rivets were easy to remove and before long the top panel was removed and the panels ready for painting.

Now painting was the hardpart. The client's choice of colour and effect cannot be achieved by simple spray-painting, Rust-Oleums, anodizing nor powdercoating. All of these either come out matte or glossy but a single even-layered coat. The requirement was somewhat complex. A metallic maroon red that is glossy. An effect only available on cars. I.e. a brand-new Jaguar XJR, with the metallic-shiny shimmering effect.

So with the help of Froze bro, the panels were then sent to a car workshop to be sprayed.

I must say, despite a slight mishap, I am very satisfied with the overal result of the paint job and I have trouble trying to capture that shimmering effect with my camera! So here are some pictures with different lighting in an attempt to capture the shimmering effect.

The panels are just so chio! I handled them with gloves as they were fingerprint magnets.

If you look carefully, you can see the metallic, shimmering effect of the paintjob, like micro-beads on the surface to give it the glittery effect.

It's time to put in the hardware! Very humple specs. Simple E5200 proc and Asus mobo with onboard GMA3100 graphics, 4Gb DDR2 ram, 500gb harddrive, Andyson 480 PSU.

The venerable and all-time favourite AS5 was the choice of TIM here. No need for MX-2 or IC7...

There is no need for an aftermarket cooling solution, but since the client will be using the PC for extended periods of time, I swapped out the original low-profile 45nm stock cooler for one of my "store's" 65nm stock intel coolers, it's got a larger profile and a copper base. Cooling performance should be substantially better than the stock low-profile cooler intended for 45nm processors.

A simple sleeving job won't kill

All the components all installed. Wire sleeving and management isn't necessary since the client has no desire to open up the casing and the internal airflow is already sufficient and spacious enough. All settings will be at stock setting.

Not really, doing something similar, but not the same, just crystals only. Too expensive to just air-brush those designs on and the client doesn't mind.
