My first WiNDy Thom Sep 20th, 09, 11:25 PM #1 (permalink)
Finally took the plunge after Zetc, Booest & elpibe10 have all been singing WiNDy in my ears when I was looking for a small casing for my mATX board. Thanks to elpibe10, I'm a owner too. The 1st post will be a introduction to the FSR1000 RS casing, the specs, the included hardware as well as some other accessories. The 2nd post will be the hardware that I will be installing into the system with the 3rd post touching on the installation.

Size: 364mm(H) 199mm(W) 438mm(D)

After buying a buddy movie & dinner to ferry the casing for me, it's finally home! The casing was light & small very handy to carry.

Casing is just what I wanted, not too big, not too small, just with 4 lesser pci slots.

Comparing the size with my old Lian Li PC-G7

Everything for WiNDy is expensive.... the alumiinium feet, the bay leaf cover... the pci slots cover... the thumbscrews....

my 2nd bay leaf, I'm not going to install 2 dvd roms, I just wanted a symmetrical outlook on all the bays like I previously did for my Lian Li PC-G7

WiNDy case has pretty good workmanship all around, including the pci slots cover which is really cool looking. Couldn't bear to use them... yet...

WiNDy SS120 fans looks like plain old black fans but sports a Super Silent logo sticker.

WiNDy front and back fan grills:

The HDD tray holds up to 5 HDDs. 1 more can be hold in the 3.5" external compartment.

My first WiNDy
Intel i7 860 @2.8GHz | Asus ROG Maximus III Gene | 2 x 2GB OCZ Platinum DDR3 12800 LV | Antec TP650
Asus EN9600GT Green | Velociraptor WD1500HLFS | 2 x WD Caviar Green WD10EADS | 2 x LG L226WTQ-BF
A little "something" I did for my video card
Good & cheap don't come fast. Cheap & fast won't be good. Fast and good will definitely not be cheap.

Some of the hardware that I'm going to use inside the system:

It all began when I wanted to upgrade my system for Q6600 after 2 years, I think Core2Quad still have some life to it so didn't upgrade the processor.

This is the reason why I got a WiNDy case, got this matx board and felt that it just didn't seem right to fit it in my atx casing. The Lian Li PC-G7.

I have always like the concept of the ROG but couldn't afford them previously, now its at a ok price for 775

Adding a little touch of JP-ness on the Maximus II Gene board.

I have decided to change the TIM for the northbridge and southbridge cos I have read several bad remarks on how Asus did their TIM and true enough, they are crispy and crusty. Had a hard time scraping them off with zippo lighter fluid.

Birdshit method: I find that this method is best for all scenario, let nature takes it on course with the screws. air get caught in spread method and the 5 dots method don't spread very well. TIM used is MX2.

Upgraded my old FSP to the Corsair HX620

Upgraded from 2x1GB PC6400 to 2x2GB PC8500

My old gelid wing 12 fans taken out from my Lian Li PC-G7. Very nice looking fans with very low noise (for me at least) Blades can be taken out easily to clean and the 50cm cables are all pre sleeved. I would probably just install 2 or 3 inside the WiNDy case. Anyone wants to take a Wing 12 and a Wing 8 off me? ^-^

I foresee that installing my velociraptor, raptor and 2x1tb storage is going to be very different and difficult on the new casing.

Sourced some of the nylon washers to use with screw to protect the anodized casing ^^; if anyone needs them, i got a buttload of them heh

Changing the front front grill and removing that back grill:

Houston, we got a problem #1
Top of the Xigmatek Dark Knight was just touching the bottom of the PSU bracket. Still works and I currently have my best mount ever: 34゜c~39゜c and therefore I'm kinda reluctant to rotate it to face up or change a smaller HSF.

Deciding on those pci slots covers:
Clockwise from topleft: Stock, Silverstone Aeroslots, WiNDy Slot Covers (Inside shot), WiNDy Slot Covers

Someday I will have alot of WiNDy thumb screws, just not today ^^; fixed up the HDD into the HDD rack

Houston we got a problem #2
With the HDD rack slot in, I can only access 3 of the 6 sata ports facing outwards even with 90degrees cables.

With the newer FSR 1000 series, the HDD rack is rotate such that the sata ports face behind. but if you have a long video card, you can only put up to 3xHDD. Hmmm.

The thing I like about having a small casing is that you don't have alot of space to do cable management. That's why its easy, you either do it right or wrong. My cable management (or the lack of it)

Completed and covered up. The way I like it to be, I remembered saying something along the lines of " I miss those days.. where PC used to be all covered up, beige color & under a huge CRT monitor" I'm getting closer to that each day

a typical windy case cost from like ~20000yen (~S$300) upwards, there is ALOT of customization that can be done and are not cheap. I heard there is a ground shipping of 1050yen for everything ordered through their website. Then comes the killer part, shipping cost like something between $150 ~ $250 depending on size and weight. So usually by the time you get a windy case in Singapore, it will be at least $500ish. (Those frequent importers can correct me if I'm wrong)

I made some customization to the package too elpibe10 has worked out a special price for me.
