This guide is meant to be a helpful start for newbies at overclocking. Bear in mind that this guide is not exact with every system configuration available, although I’ll try to keep it as wide-ranging as I possibly can. Also consider that overclocking is dangerous if you go over a ‘safe’ limit, no matter how good equipment you have. Good equipment will lessen the risk but can never negate it completely.

Thanks to Grace for writing a detailed article about basic overclocking for the VR-Zone community. Hope this guide will jumpstart everyone who has the interest to try out overclocking but doesn't know where to start.

Alright ! way 2 go Gracie !!

Has any one found a guid on how ot mod the asus P4P800 voltage to get more than 300 FSB? I am running 3.6 ghz@ default core voltage, so I know I have some crazy overclocking cpu, but its just held back by the mainboard. I have been searching for weeks, and cant find nothing. I can run my cpu at a good 5C under full load, but it does no good to waste my peltiers power when it will run 3.6@ 35c, so I got a temp conrole unit and have it holding 25C all the time.

Any one?

As I have found this guide immeasurably useful in my first attempts at OC, and I still have a working PC and I'm a noob

One thing to mention, highlight is perhaps the guide needs to just empthasise the importance of good quality RAM and the amount of juice they require. Trick for higher FSB was the DDR voltage, was very hesitant in bumping up but looks ok.

My air rig first time system is now running :

IC7-MAX3
2.8 P4 @ 3.15GHz 225FSB, 1.575V
Kingston HyperX 3500 @ 1:1, 3V
timings : 2.5, 3, 3, 6

and still stable

So Grace thank you very much for the guide - it totally rocks - just working in the radeon 9800 Pro and will try OC that too

btw are these settings within acceptable limits - i.e. will live for a year? I'm kinda new so if someone says well your system maybe running okay now but in a month its going to be a burnt cinder then I will ramp down...

my system temps, celcius are at load (X2 demo for a couple of hours):

CPU HS: 40
Graphics HS: 50
HDD: 29
Case: 28

yes...thats quite ok...will last for 5 yrs at least...i tink...

RAM, let me know one thing.

Those HyperX modules of yours are the recent A series or the older?

Keeping it simple, were they rated 2/6/3/2 or 2/6/2/2 by factory?

Or even more simple, write me the big letters code on the strap of their package.

Unfortunately I havent kept the packaging so I dont know the factory values:

However as its you I've just had a look in my PC - I think they are the more recent A series.

I presume you are asking as these are the lower standard ones for Kingston that correct i.e. they changed chip manufacturers from the B type read about it somewhere :

I could never get the timing 2.5 to 2 -> system driver failures upon bootup.
Figured the 3, 3 had to be the same if not higher than the 2.5 so left alone. Hence only changed 8 to 6 figured couldnt get lower than the summation of the two three's so 6 is the lowest?

Umm err oh these Hyper X's really needed juice to OC.

I got failures with Prime 95 after typically 45mins @
220FSB 2.8V, stable at 2.9V
225FSB 2.9V, stable at 3V

I used Winbond which is showing .15 fluctuation in my DDR voltage btw.


HamsterBoy - yeah I generally upgrade once every 2 years.. Im a gaming addict - plus I run my own business so my machines get recycled into the company.

These are the older modules. Which are better but your motherboard doesn't seem to appreciate them. Compatibility issue. Happens with Pc3200/Pc3500 HyperX and many P4 boards.

With 3v at 225MHz you should be able to use 2/5/2/2 timings under normal circuimstances with those modules, they carry BH-5 chips if they are the older series.

And about all the timings, the lower they are they better it is.
