Repost: Register for VR-Zone Badminton Teams here... Asimof Aug 7th, 05, 11:42 PM #1 (permalink)
REMINDER for all interested players

With bookings done 2 weeks in advance, it is now better for every interested player to check this thread and register their name if they want to play.

Your attendance for the next game will NOT be checked at the end of a game, because you are now expected to post in this thread to register yourself.

Registration of name is on first-come-first-served basis.

Those whose miss out, too bad. This is a fairer system. We are also struggling to book enough courts.

Those who add friends' name for them, please advise them to register with VR forum and then add their names themselves, to be fair to the rest.

Update : Saturday, 12 August 2006.

After having the chance to play at various venues, i decided to give a simple evaluation and ranking to each of them. Below is a summary. (the higher the score, the better)

==============================================================

Player Grading

Courtesy of mongoose of Badminton Central forum, here is a more precise and measurable definition:

=================================

Professionals/Ex-professionals:

Players currently representing/represented their countries in international tournaments. National youth players do not count.

Advanced:

Players who are/were members of the national training squad but have not represented their countries in major international tournaments belong to this category. National Youth squad trainees (above age 17) belong to this category too.

Intermediates:

Players who regularly take part in local competitions and have had a high degree of success. Inter-con players who have won regularly belong to this category. These players possess very good fundamentals but lack the experience and certain aspects of their game to put them on par with the Advanced players eg speed, power, stamina, killer instinct, gameplay.

Low Intermediates:

Players who have/had occasionally taken part in local competitions but have not had a high degree of success. These players generally belong to social groups/clubs and occasionally take part in local tournament just for fun. Generally have very sounds basics and good gameplay but do not undergo regular formal training. As such, they do not have good stamina, speed and power to match the more regular competitive players.

High beginners:

These are the regular social players. Occasionally take part in friendly matches with other social groups. Have low degree of success in friendly matches. Hardly takes part in local competitions.

Beginners:

Generally players who have played for less than a year. Have not taken part even in friendly matches. May be able to execute proper strokes and footwork but lack success in match situations.

====================================

And to top it all, here is a tongue-in-cheek dig on player-classification. Credit goes to Jim of Badminton Central Forum.

Group 1
Hey we are pretty damn good, almost to the level of being able to give the best in the country a tough fight, so don't bother playing with us if you play like crap!

Group 2
We were once good, in fact we still sit around and talk about the glory days! So dont bother coming if you have no stories to share, and we have no time for anyone who cannot leap 3 feet off the ground before executing a perfect smash

Group 3
We actually feel that we are superior to the rest of you, and will look at you with absolute disgust and contempt if you happen to miss a shot. So dont bother coming if you are planning to miss a few shots, it will just totally spoil our day and you will totally hate that.

Group 4
We are not bothered with your level of play, just a bunch of slightly
overweight people looking to have some fun. Yeah we will miss a lot of shots but at least we will not make you feel like scum of the earth. At the end of the day we will go back to our families with a big fat smile on our faces.

Useful Information Corner
(updated as at 25 May 2007)

Yonex Shuttle Speed Classification
- Information from Longame

The shuttles speeds were usually divided into 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80. If you do a high serve with the same strength, there is about 30 cm difference between each speed.

Shuttle speeds are design to suit different parts of the world. Shuttle flight is affected by temperature, altitude (air density) and humidity.

Examples:
Speed 76 used in China during the summer and 77 during winter
Speed 75 used in Thailand
Speed 76 and 77 used in Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia
Speed 77 and 78 used in U.S.A
Speed 78 and 79 used in Finland, Canada, Korea and Japan
Speed 79 and 80 used in Australia in winter
Speed 73 and 74 would only be played in high altitude areas

Speed 78 (Speed 3) is not used in Singapore (too fast). Most probably it was brought into Singapore by parallel importers who are not well informed about shuttles. It is also usually cheaper as people here don't like them (too fast for them to control).

do u want to join the west zone? we cannot meet everybody's requirement to have the games near everybody's home. i am afraid most of us have to do a bit of travelling to join the games.

so, please let me know. thnks.
