$300 can probably get you a decent enough hardtail (no rear suspension) mountain bike. Full suspension bikes at this price range are gonna be quite heavy, but if you're ok with that, then no prob.

Full suspensions bikes are not just only heavy, it adds a lot strain to the leg muscles when you pedal.

Reason is simple:

It gets easier when when you ride in a higher posture and thats when your power distribution becomes efficient when you ride in high posture and push down the pedal.

For Full Suspension Bikes:

When you sit down, the suspension beneath your seat post is being pressed down, so your seating posture has been lowered, so when you try pedal hard and push yourself up an uphill, you will face difficulties climbing.... and pedaling is jut not as efficient as a bike without the lower suspension.

Where to try out? You can find that there are some bike shops along Upper East Coast Road, or visit the following Rodalink outlets:

Walk in, browse around and you can ask the staff to let you try any of their bikes that are being fully assembled and displayed in their store.

Do not buy on impulse, it is recommended to browse around more bike shops before buying one...

Actually, recent full susp bike designs and rear shock designs have mostly negated pedalling bob. Either that or the rear shock features lockout for hard climbs up hill.

Depending on the money put in, a full susp cross country (xc) bike can weigh the same or lighter as one without rear suspension (hardtail).

If I may use this as an example, my large sized 2008 Giant Anthem (has near zero or zero pedalling bob even without rear shock lockout) weighs 26lbs. The '08 model has 3.5" of rear travel.

Comparatively, the '09 Anthem X has 4" of rear travel and weighs even lighter than the '08 one.

One of the hardtails I had (albeit low end) weighed in at 33lbs.

Depending on the bike brands that TS is going to look at, I'd also recommend going to shops like Hup Leong, Chapter 2 Cycle (C2C) etc.

hi TS, i owned tat kinda bike before.. its a weight training machine man.. weigh like a ton.. i will not consider tat as a FS... its just a bicycle with rear spring..

FS technology has improve leap and bound.. specialized has their FSR and brain fade, giant has their maestro and many more e.g.. they each help eliminate pedal bob effectively.. FS are meant for the trails where traction is paramount.. and some FS bike can be as light as hardtails, if not, lighter..

if u ride on road, i suggest u get a hybrid with rigid fork or a roadie..

shops tat i reco are: hup leong, chapter 2 cycle and L&T

What theodr mentioned about the rear suspension bikes power distribution is true.. I myself own a shimano bike almost exactly like the one in the picture... However, i have to add this in for the vast majority of the populace do not know the true reason for the rear suspension...

Although you do have to pedal slightly harder to accelerate, maintaining momentum is almost the same as a front-only suspension bike... On top of that the main reason for the rear suspension is not to cushion your butt on rough terrain but rather, your leg... The shocks experienced when partially standing on the bike while riding fast on rough/rocky terrain can be really damaging to your leg when not properly cushioned... And you might not really understand what im getting at... If possible experience it for yourself, you might actually feel the difference immediately..

btw, might be wise if someone locked this thread... quite old liao..
