How much does the thermal grease help in cooling your sys ? quantumfusion Jan 16th, 09, 12:18 PM #1

I thought thermal grease brand is quite important and can probably affect a temperature difference of up to 10 degree. Probably a 20% importance in cooling your system , what do u think ?

.Also can someone tell me the usual good brand of thermal compound that you use and how much u got it for and from where?

thermal paste is to aid in the conducting of heat from the heat source to the heat sink..coz there might be pockets of air which exist in the irregular surface of the contacts (invisible to the human eye) which is a poor conductor of heat..the purpose of this thermal paste is to fill in this gap to ensure a better transfer of heat..

recommend getting tx2 or mx2...

initialli i was quite a fan of arctic silver 5 but its messy to clean up..

up to 10 degrees ? thats rare.

mx-2 is on the higher end, if you aren't that picky you can get some star thermal paste for $1.50 or anabond for $3.50.

i'm getting the gelid gc1 thermal compound from the MO of scythe and gelid products. from many reviews, it seems it's a pree good thermal compound and it even comes with an applicator.

GO ORDER IT FROM THE MO SO I CAN ALSO ENJOY THE MO PRICE!

how often should one REapply the thermal paste?

also VERY IMPORTANT Q: how to check whether the heat contact surfaces are totally flat? it's very hard to see once the gigantic heatsink is fitted on as it blocks the entire view of the contact surface.

using graph paper and a big light source.

all you have to do is spread a cheap white thermal paste on your gigantic heatsink, mounting it then notice where the paste doesn't spread to.

i am quite new to application of thermal paste but it seems that using an applicator wldnt be as good as using a 'drop of pea' that kind of thing.. not sure how to describe tho.. haha

Just put your thermal paste around the size of a rice grain (GO KITCHEN FIND THE SIZE!) on the middle of your GPU/CPU. Once the pressure comes down, it will spread the thermalpaste evenly to the sites. Its better than spreading it anyhow and leaving air pockets in the middle.

Finally, you don't need to re-apply your thermal paste if you're using a good one like MX-2 / Ceramique or AS-5

Based on experience I have never found a perfectly flat cpu or heatsink
