Funny Experience in Taiwan khaos83_2000 Aug 27th, 09, 04:20 PM #1 (permalink)
I was walking around 台大 University of Taiwan during evening time. It was getting dark, so I decided to get out and find myself a dinner. There are lots of shops and restaurants across the street but there's no pedestrian crossing, only underground tunnels. So I went down and attempt to find my way across. Strangely, I just can't find my way across. I was still at the side of University of Taiwan.

Just then, I notice a bunch of youngsters cycling across the road. Since I find my way across using the tunnel, I might as well run across the road. So I positioned myself beside the next batch of cyclists and waited for them to move off. The traffic clears and the cyclists sped across as I ran behind them. It was a 50m run as the roads in Taiwan are broader and has more lanes than Singapore.

I reached the other end panting for my breathe, giving myself a pat on my back for being so smart. :p Just when I was about to evacuate from the "crime scene", I heard someone shouting to me "Why you cross the road illegally. Let me see some identification"
I look across my shoulder and saw a traffic police looking at me! Talking about culture exchange, this is one I didn't look forward to!
I gave him my passport and tried to sweet talk him into letting me go with a warning. He ignored me and flipped through my passport and immigration papers.

"Doesn't Singapore has traffic rules? How can you cross the road like you did just now?" the traffic police ask.

"Sorry ah... I can't find my way and it's so dark. Give me a chance lah..." I pleaded repeatedly with other excuses.

"I will let you go this time. Better don't do it again."

"OK, I won't do it again. Thanks."

He returned my passport. I quickly turned around and slip into the crowd. What a close shave! I almost got an unique souvenir from my maiden trip to Taiwan, a personalized traffic booking ticket.
