US road trip (56k beware) telefone Sep 4th, 09, 06:03 PM #1 (permalink)
Had a recent roadtrip on the west coast.
Los Angeles -> Las Vegas -> Grand Canyon (and back)

SIN - LAX in C: UA 804, UA 890
SIN T3
Checked in rather late, therefore was not able to enjoy the lounge much. Invitation was given to the SATS lounge but the food selections here are dismal compared to the SKL. However, having a UA flight, which departs at one of the B gates, walking to the SKL and back might make me miss my flight. So I simply went to the SATS lounge for some ee-mian and light breakfast.

UA 804, seat 12B
Old config UA 777, only a miserable 5 or 6 or 7" TV with no video on demand. Didn't really sleep the previous night (7am flight), so slept most of the way for this flight, only waking up for the meal. No lie flat seats, but the lack of sleep make this flight a very good flight to sleep on. Had the braised short ribs. UA don't have that great a meal even in C, as compared to SQ.

UA 890, seat 15B (upper deck)
New config UA 747. These planes have the new lie flat seats in C as well as new 15" TV. Videos / games on demand. 15B is a backward facing seat and is on the quieter upperdeck. One of the longer flights on UA and the full meal service is given, starting with warm nuts, proper appetizer, then the main course. I had the Japanese set here, together with some sake. Not that bad a meal, but the portions may be slightly less. Comes with some sushi and noodles.

(disclaimer: I did not take pictures on the flight, but this is the meal for the flight)

Los Angeles
I stayed at a friend's place here, so not much lodging. Visited a few places like Hollywood, Griffith Observatory, the Avenue of Stars (MJ's star was actually littered with flowers and pictures). Also drove pass the tunnel (that Bumblebee transformed) as well as the Porcshe dealership (that the dad drove through) inside LA.

Los Angeles - Las Vegas
This is a 4 hour drive, traffic was not as smooth as expected, but at least the drive was completed with no police worries.

Las Vegas
Stayed at the Encore, had a promotion code from a friend for about $100 per night with a $50 dining credit. Gambled abit and watched a show, but only here for 3 days 2 nights, 1st day almost spent driving, left early 3rd day for Grand Canyon, so did not do alot here.

Few pictures of hotels (in vegas) on the way:
Excalibur

MGM Grand

The Venetian

The Encore

Bathroom (actually much larger, but picture doesn't show the whole room

Las Vegas to Grand Canyon
This route takes us through the Hoover dam, the dam which Transformer 1 was filmed (pictures below), we stayed at this motel 1 hour away from Grand Canyon, which seem to be the best hotel (star ratings wise) that is reasonable distance away from Grand Canyon South Rim. The pictures do not do justice to the magnificence of Grand Canyon, the views are simply breath taking. However, the visit was cut short due to rain, so we headed to the motel for the night.
