Shanghai work trip sapienz Nov 6th, 09, 10:32 AM #1 (permalink)
I'll be working at Shanghai for about 3 mths shortly,
i'm actually thinking of getting maybe a laptop, iphone or maybe a psp there.
Has anybody got any experience buying electronics there?
Are the prices there actually cheaper or similar to here?

My question is WHY?

From my experience, prices there are not very different from Singapore.

I normally steer clear of buying electronics from China because the experience to me is like buying from a basement shop in Lucky Plaza.

Best case scenario, you get an original item and save a few dollars, worst case, you get a fake, modified or incomplete set with no warranty.

Thanks for the input,
i actually had the idea that things might be cheaper there since alot of electronics are actually made in china.
Guess i'll need to reconsider.

No name products maybe, but brand name products like Apple, Sony etc are all about the same as here.

One thing to note, never ever buy any memory stick, compact flash, thumbdrive etc from China no matter how cheap they are or even if you go to an authorized dealer or official shop.

Most of the brand name products are export only so they can earn more. Local consumption is usually all the local brand or no brand products which they can earn much more from the consumption tax.

The chances of getting a fake is very high. Even authorized dealers and official shops can't tell the difference.

hi! my relatives (Singaporeans lah!) had been staying in Shanghai for years due to their papa's posting. Guess what, they are always back to SGP to get stuff like PSP, Apple Ipod, Wii...they are not much cheaper there and you have a risk of getting an incomplete set like don't have this or that accessories cos' they give you a better price. The shop remove some accesssories to quote you a better price, and you have to top-up to get the 'extras'.

So, buy in Singapore!!! Support Singapore economy!!!
