Realising my OP was way back in 2008, decided to update for HTPC solutions for 2011 and beyond hehe
1st refer to sig for updated audio setup. I have also a TV card recording OTA/Cable TV to hdd as well as adopted XBMC and WinTV7 for media browsing and Live TV respectively. Due to the hdd prices being out of whacked i am holding out on a juicy 3TB hdd until next year? XBMC had a plethora of addons which i would show in the nest few pics
There is also shutdown monster which is 100% effective in shutting down your HTPC after the last recording of the day and yes there is an option to hibernate as well and other advanced features which i had not explored ^^ Book lovers : there is the NaviX addon which provides access to Librivox (NaviX--> Networks--> Music folder) and lots of free audio books wee~
The way i organise huge media collection is very rudimentary and i would have to spend some time arriving movies w.r.t genre for example
WinTV scheduler records all TV to my designated "Recorded TV" folder and everything is accessed via XBMC Am a huge Seinfeld fan too and the Veetle addon is awesome for this hehe

I decided to spend time to enable control of the HTPC with my supplied TV Card IR remote but if you dun have the time or just want an easy solution there are plenty of HTPC remotes/kb/etc available in the market only limited by your budget but this was how i did it

Inchoate Thoughts
By the way for those keen: you could set external player for Blu Ray playback within XBMC (PowerDVD, TMT, etc)

It also doubles on (on LCD Monitor) as secondary TV if one family member wants to watch MIO and another free to air stuff hehe. Recordings, movies, etc played via XBMC + remote
