Need help! 4 Pin fan connector?!? el_leumas Feb 4th, 09, 10:00 PM #1 (permalink)
Hi, I bought a 90mm fan today but only after I reached home that I found out it isn't the normal 3 pin connector, but a 4 pin connector. Do I need a separate cable or can my normal 3 pin connector attached to it?

Actually, the normal 3 pin connector head, it has only 2 'heads' right? the rightmost 1 is empty...

1) Your normal 3 pin connector works fine.

Here's how it works.

1 wire is for +12V
1 wire is for ground
1 wire is for RPM sensor
1 wire is for PWM speed control.

Some fans have only 2 wires, and you cannot detect their RPM using software.

Some fans have 4 wires, you can control their fan speed using software.

4 pins usually fit fine into 3 pins (leave out the PWM control wire which is usually blue)... Although there is a type that is found on industrial fans and wont fit.

First option is to buy a 4pin to 3 pin adapter
Click the image to open in full size.

Second option is to cut the wire and use heatshrink/tape to connect back manually.
If i remember correctly,
fan red to molex yellow(12V)
black to black(Ground)
yellow is redundant (no need connect)
SELLING: CCFL,Sound Controller,UV Fan,Rubber Fan screw,UV Sleeve,UV Molex,UV Cable tie & more..

That's a molex adapter for fan
I think he has a PWN fan. That adapter won't work.

Like what sabe said, you can probably hook your 4-pin fan into a 3-pin male connector on the MB without problem.
