help for setting up server woolrang Feb 22nd, 09, 12:20 AM #1 (permalink)
hi ,
i need to know the basic requirements for setting up a server with following needs

a) about 250-300users can see videos from it (they cant download) at the same time .
b) same number of users will be playing games and i will be hosting about 10 gaming servers (4 counter strike , 4 age of empires,2 call of duty).

also usres will be connected to server through WLAN and cant share data with each other .

so i need to know these basic things about the machine :-
1. RAM
2. PROCESSOR
3.NETWORK CARD
4. CACHE

AND THIS WONT BE HOSTED THROUGH INTERNET JUST LAN CONNECTIVITY(with permission to users only to download and play through server not from each other).

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Nowadays a PC is near powerful enough to be a server, you doesnt really need to exact requirements.

I think 8x VelociRaptor in Raid 10 would be better.

I doubt 4GB ram is enough for your requirements.

What's stopping PC from doing it?

FYI, the server parts are no "magic" parts that are indefinitely better than your desktop components. Most of the time, they're rather out-dated stuff that has been vigorously tested and comes with very good support/service/longevity; with a price markup to match.

If I build a server myself, I'll go with desktop parts. Throw in a good SAS controlller and some drives with tons of RAM and you get yourself a high performing server for a much cheaper price.

1. What's the max ram you can put on your desktop?
2. ECC support?
3. Shared ram between CPUs.
4. How many CPU can you have on your desktop?
5. How many PSUs can you have on your desktop?
6. Can your desktop be remotely managed?
7. Can your desktop be mounted in a rack?
8. Does your desktop have dual 10gb ethernet ports?
The list goes on............

1. What's the max ram you can put on your desktop?
12GB currently for most X58 boards
2. ECC support?
And why do you need it? How much does 12GB of ECC RAM cost?
3. Shared ram between CPUs.
Do you need to have more than 1 CPU? 1 core i7 should beat most of the 2 CPUs server setup on the market today
4. How many CPU can you have on your desktop?
Do you need multiple CPU? What's the cost of a 2 CPU server?
5. How many PSUs can you have on your desktop?
As many as you like... Get a case that support dual PSU or mod a case to put as many PSU as you like?
6. Can your desktop be remotely managed?
Yes. Tell me why not?
7. Can your desktop be mounted in a rack?
Does it look like he's gonna have a loaded server room? He needs one server...
8. Does your desktop have dual 10gb ethernet ports?
What for? Unless you're linking server to server, dual gigabit ethernet is overkill already. Do you know how much a small 10GB network cost?
The list goes on............
Try to list a few more?

I just have one question back at you:
How much does a server, with a comparable performance to a fully decked core i7, cost right now?

Between a fully souped up server (talking about HPs, Suns, even Dells) and a similar cost i7, it's like comparing a F1 car and a WRC car, they are fast, but of different purposes.

p.s: Go for some Intel gigabit NICs that run on PCI-Express if you're going for the i7 route, the Realtek NICs can't quite cut it.
