Problem with board and PSU (Doesn't seem to have power) ChaoticOrb Jul 16th, 09, 11:24 PM #1 (permalink)
Bought a Biostar TA790GX-XE from Bell.

Went home, cannot boot, board don't seem to have power running through it, as I tested the board with 2 different PSUs that are known to be running, FSP Espilion 600W and CM 380W.

Went to 1-to-1, and tested the new board at their shop before going home. Board running fine, I brought my rams and cpu along so as to eliminate the possibility of the problem lying in my rams and cpu.

I tested the new board at home with the CM 380W, then the same problem came. The board didn't seem to have power running through it.

At this point, I suspected that it might be the CM 380W that's short-ing both this new board and the previous one.

I tested CM 380W with a 12cm case fan and jumping the PSU.
Fan runs fine, even with the LEDs running brightly.

Now, the new board remains dead, going to bring back to Bell tomorrow.

But can anyone remedy my problem?
Because with all the testing at the shop, it seems like the problem doesn't lie with the board.
But yet when I jumped the CM 380W and tested it with a case fan, it runs fine.

Thus now I can't identify where the problem lies in, and it has already killed 2 boards.

Need help identifying where the problem lies in.

Thanks in advance.

Edit:
Okay, I killed my third board already.

First board - Everything was inside the casing, Using CM 380W

Second board - At shop tested ok. Went home test. Everything was inside the casing, Using CM 380W

Third Board - At shop tested ok. Went home test. Only PSU is inside the casing(fixed), Using FSP Epsilion 600W, mobo is on rubber surface table with the provided mobo sponge underneath.

Second and Third Board testing is done with minimal connections. (ie only monitor, mouse, kb, 1pc ram, 24pin, ATX12V) Nothing unnecessary is connected.

Now, all the 3 boards died.
With some logical thinking, I conclude, either,

1) Both PSUs are spoilt.
2) PSU fixed to the Casing, leading to board's death?

The FSP Epsilion just came back from RMA, and I've personally tested it on my own Asus Commando before deciding that it was working after the RMA.

I was thinking, even if the CM 380W is spoilt, and killed the board with the voltages, it is very improbable that my FSP Epsilion is having the exact same problem.

I can confirm that the problem(s) lie in my testing procedure, or equipment, but I just cannot identify where's the problem.

Can casings even kill boards, just because the PSU is fixed onto the casing?

In my first post, I've already stated that I've tried with 2 different PSUs.

same thoughts as terence52. probably something wrong with your 5v/3.3v rail as it powers the 24pin if i'm not mistaken. use a multimeter to measure the voltages.

Hmm... sounds like bad fungshui. To ease yourself of all the unnecessary pains, why don't you bring everything down to Bell service centre and ask them to set it up. Maybe you need to pay a bit of money and damage a bit of a DIYer's ego, but it's a reasonable price to pay.

hmm. maybe troubleshoot your other components like ram or keyboard. test them on your main rig?

My rams were taken out from my current computer, so they were last-known to be working.

Besides, when I went to SLS to have them test the board, I brought my rams as well, just so as to prove that it wasn't my rams.

Thus I've already eliminated my rams as the problem source.
