Tower unable to power up properly nutcase23 Oct 30th, 09, 07:26 PM #1 (permalink)
Recently my tower started to have problems powering-up but the symptoms are kind of strange.

Notes:-
- Pushing the power button doesn't work most of the time.
- The green LED on the motherboard is on whenever there is mains power to my tower.
- When I DO manage to get it to power up, everything works normally.
- If I put my thumbdrive into my front USB port, and pull in or out or something while ramming the power button, I can sometimes get it to power-up (I have NO idea why or how)
- If I put it to stand-by mode, I will not be able to boot up again.
- No error beep sound on powering-up (when I do get it to power-up)
- Already tried changing power socket and power cable, no difference.

Setup:-
- C2D E6300 1.86GHz + Asus P5B-VM G965 Motherboard (almost 2 years old)
- 3GB 667MHz RAM (3 sticks)
- Cooler Master 430W Extreme Power PSU
- Boston CT-228 Casing
- 2 x SATA HDD
- 1 x IDE DVD-RW

Any help in isolating the problem so I can get it fixed would be greatly appreciated.

Just getting my computer to power-up is starting to be a pain

Are you able to turn on your system without the use of the power button on the casing? Meaning using a screwdriver to short the power pins on the mobo. Try doing that. If you don't know how, another way is to use your RESET button to replace your Power button. Just change the pin. See how it goes from there.

If it still have the same issues, it could be PSU or Mobo.

Okay I finally got time to try out your idea and it is a no-go.

What does it prove? That the root of the problem is not in the button itself?

Also, I noticed that the tower now has a "charge up time" where I can only successfully boot it up if I let the mains run for a short while.

Which do you think is more likely? PSU or Mobo problem?

If PSU I can just get it replaced but if mobo....
