RAM voltage for i7 TriSinc Nov 1st, 09, 07:13 PM #1 (permalink)
I read somewhere that RAMs for i7 could damage the CPU if it ran above 1.65V. If I got a triple memory kit at 1.65V, would it be running at the advertised voltage or slight lower or higher?
Also, would it be viable to get a triple memory kit at 1.65V and lower the voltage between 1.5-1.6V? What will I be changing, essentially when I do so?

by default the rams will be running around the advertised voltage but not higher. if possible you can always lower the voltage, but you have to test for stability once you reduce the voltage. make sure that your clock speeds are not lowered, though.

A slight increase in RAM voltage will not toast the module so don't worry. Just try to run at the manufacturer's recommended setting.

actually the 1.65v is set by intel. supposedly will kill imc on the cpu instead of the ram module.

u can run 1.65v rated rams @ 1.5v. just that you cannot run it at the rated speeds. don't worry abt running them @ 1.65v. Intel wouldn't be so stupid to set the spec right at the limit

Thanks for the reply.

Would also like to know which one matters more on an i7 system - higher frequency or better memory timings?
