RAM issue? kuang3 Nov 2nd, 09, 01:57 PM #1 (permalink)
Hi, last week my friend asked me about his office PC problem, his PC has 1 stick 512mb and another stick 1gb. after listening to the symptoms I suspected that it is due to RAM issue. I gave him my copy of Memtest and asked him to try booting and running the utility.

after testing the RAM separately, he called me saying that the 1gb stick seems to be having problem; I asked him to slot in the 512mb stick to the slot which initially slotted with 1gb stick. after testing, he found no problem and continue to use the PC till now.

what puzzle me is that I asked him to put the supposedly faulty 1gb RAM to his own PC and test it alone, he said the test ran fine.

1. it is not advisable to run RAM in different capacities, but my friend has been using the PC with such config for around 3 years and only encounter such problem recently.

2. the 1gb module posted error during the Memtest in the office PC, but ran fine when my friend tested the same module with his own PC.

any bro can enlighten me on this issue?

each motherboard's ram slot , can have how large size, and either one side ic or double side ic, or even branded also got compability problem!... it is better to check your ram, and even the cl value and the nanosecond capable also got effect to your system!

thanks for your comment bro, apparently my friend didn't follow my instruction, he tested the RAM for a short while only before he concluded that the RAM was OK. I asked him to retest the RAM again and let the test to run overnight, it turned out that there were more than 10 errors.
