Advice on gaming gfx and psu SardonyX Nov 2nd, 09, 10:19 PM #1 (permalink)
Hi everyone!

I'm new here... and I need some recommendations on what kind of graphics card and PSU to buy. Going by all the comments about sim lim sq, I think it's best that I gather as much research as possible before going there. I am quite the computer illiterate so I need to know what exactly I'm buying.

My current desktop is about 2 years old. Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz, 960MB RAM with ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series.

Obviously the graphics card needs replacing. I need a card that's decent enough to play games like Aion, SUN and future games like TERA. It doesn't need to be too high end, I don't play fps... just good enough for quality MMOs.

If someone can recommend me a suitable and affordable gfx card + PSU, that would be great!

Also, anyone knows of any shops that can help me fix my new gfx and PSU?

Thanks in advance!

Can ur board support PCI-e?

ATI or nvidia fan? Based on 22" monitor below.

Mainstream:
Nvidia GTS250, GTS260
ATi 4870 512MB

Entry:
Nvidia 9600GT,9800GT
ATi 4850.

Get the non ref ones. Run cooler. 4850/4870 PCS or HIS if u willin to pay a lil more. PCS is a lil cheaper. $169 for Ati 4870 PCS, last i heard a mth back.

GTS250, get the Asus dark knight one. $200+

4870 performs better den 260. In fact in the whole lot, 4870 is my recommendation. 4850 i thk its about $20 bucks cheaper.
Hope that answers your GFX question.

PSU: Get anything from 500w onwards. Andyson is a good budget brand. Coolermaster Realpower 550w onwards. OCZ/Corsair for better ones.

Shops I dont know, maybe someone else can advice u here.

There you go,
hope u enjoy ur upgrade.

thanks for all the wonderful responses so far! ^^

I'm not sure if this is helpful but I have a Asterope2 motherboard. My com is just a compaq desktop.

My budget is preferrably less than $300 for both gfx and PSU.. not sure if that's feasible but I'm open to suggestions.

HKSPower and Typlo: are you guys saying I shouldn't even bother upgrading my piece of scrap metal? =[

KoKainE: thank you! I will do more research on what you suggested.

My friend suggested that I get the 9800GT. How do you think my system will deal with that?

can list out all ur spec?? so we can get a clearer pic...

not saying it not worth... maybe a little to overpowered that the full potential usage of the GFX is not fully used...
