error 986 innoxious42 Nov 6th, 09, 10:29 AM #1 (permalink)
when i make the partition on my drive using partition magic 8 there's a message says that..

error #986 unable to get information for the specific partition

when i have my research regarding with this problem, i've found out that there was a problem with the TSR (terminate and stay resident) there was a conflict with the config.sys and autoexec.bat..

here is my search about that:

#986 Unable to get information for the specified partition

PartitionMagic reports this error most commonly when MS-DOS-based
terminate-and-stay-resident programs (TSRs) are running in the background.
These TSRs will be located in the Config.sys or Autoexec.bat files.
One such TSR is the SUBST command. The SUBST can be used to associate a
path with a drive letter. This creates a “virtual drive” that can be accessed as an
additional local drive. The SUBST command is classified as a “dirty” or “deadly”
TSR, and cannot be loading at the same time that PartitionMagic is loading.
To solve the problem, you must remark out the Config.sys or Autoexec.bat line
that is loading the SUBST command. This command can be reinstated after
running PartitionMagic.
There are other “dirty” or “deadly” TSRs that may cause a problem. If you are
experiencing this error and are not using the SUBST command, find and remark
out any of the following commands: Join, Append, or Assign.

how can i fix this this problem??

please help..
thanks..

You have not stated your OS yet.
Base on the above, you need to ammend in your current root drive the following files.
1) Autoexec.bat
2) Config.sys
The SUBST is an old dos command which you can assign a physical drive to another drive name. E.g. SUBST a: b: <- Meaning if a: was a 5.25 optical drive, it would now be b:
This could be one of the issues as your parition cannot find the details in the virtual location.

Similarly "Join, Append, or Assign" have effects.
Putting "REM " in the front part of the line means you have changed it to a comment, save and re-boot.
Do your parition, and then edit the file, remove the REM to restore back your original configuration.

Hope this helps

The answer is given to you.
Or you do not understand your problem?

In simplistic explaination.

You probably got some boot initialization commands which create a virtual drive.
As virtual drives don't really exist, when partitiion magic program is initialized, it scans all drives to get their information. It sees this virtual drive and cannot obtain information on it.
So it gives you an error telling you it cannot do the assigned task.

To resolve it, go to your computers' initialization files (you still have not told what OS you are running?) and REM (change the command to become a comment line). Re-boot and since the command is removed, when you run Partitiion Magic 8, it would not find this virtual drive and you should not have any errors.
