Ram problem? Or motherboard problem? Confused!! Ratix0 Oct 9th, 06, 03:49 PM #1 (permalink)
OK I have yet to do more testing, but thus far, I have get these weird results, and some problems with my com.

Problems include and not limited to:
1) Large files I copy from my DVDs tend to be corrupted, some part isn't copied correctly. Then when I copy again could be fine, or could be corrupted else where, this confirmed that the copy burned in the DVD is fine. It doesn't occur for just one file, it has occured for numerous files.

2) Problem erasing a DVD-RW, it will eject halfway automatically while erasing, and when I try to put the disk back in and open it, it gives me a "Incorrect Function" or something along that line(Can't remember the exact error but it has some function error or something). Can't burn into it either. Then when I try to continue erase, it'll erase for a while then eject halfway again. Might not be a problem with my ram, since I tried switching out the ram I thought to be the problem, still can't erase.

Now, I thought could be ram problem. I ran memtest. Something came up. I get a fail result in Test 5. So I took one ram out(Using 2x512), the one that was recently RMAed. Then ran memtest again. Its fine. So i thought probably problem with the RMAed ram. Went down to convergent, they tested, its fine, no error nothing. Becuase the RMAed ram is of a different chipset from my other one(The RMA guy gave me another one because thats the 2nd time I RMA ram), the guy suggested that it could be incompatibility and suggest me to bring both rams down.

When I came home, I switched the ram slots for the 2 rams, again(Which I did some time ago to see if could be my motherboard's fault), and now i just ran memtest, totally no error. But my problems still persist. Going to try the different ram slots with both ram and run memtest to test, but not now since I am rather busy. Perhaps wednesday or something.

I have yet to do more testing, but I want to know if it could be a possibility that my motherboard's ramslots giving problems?

My specs:
Abit KV8 Pro with A64 2800+ (S754)
2x512MB Kingston DDR400 CL3 ram
Antec smartpower 350W
BenQ DW1640

I don't get it. Now that I have switched the ram slots, I am able to open my DVD-RW without problem, it'll display blank, but Istill have problem erase. That function error no longer occurs. O_o weird!

TCCD works better with weak DRAM Drive Strength while just about everything else prefers a stronger signal. So may be you want to try this in your bios.

Hmmm now I confirm its not my drive, although Im pretty certain it ain't. I have another CD burner drive and i tried with CD-RWs, I get the same stuff. After I burn on them, I am not able to open them. When I try to erase them, they will pop out of the disk drive before its done, although I am able to write on them again.

Like that:
Click the image to open in full size.

So the problems include and not limited to:
1) Large files I copy from my DVDs tend to be corrupted, some part isn't copied correctly. Then when I copy again could be fine, or could be corrupted else where, this confirmed that the copy burned in the DVD is fine. It doesn't occur for just one file, it has occured for numerous files.

2) Problem erasing a DVD-RW/CD-RW(From different drives), it will eject halfway automatically while erasing, and when I try to put the disk back in and open it, it gives me a "Incorrect Function" or something along that line(Can't remember the exact error but it has some function error or something). Then when I try to continue erase, it'll erase for a while then eject halfway again. Might not be a problem with my ram, since I tried switching out the ram I thought to be the problem, still can't erase. When I try to write into a RW, any new one too, i can't open it and I get the Incorrect Function error. Although after the erase I tried which does not work properly, I can burn onto the disk again, but it still gives me function error.

Doesnt' seem to occur for the DVDRs or normal CDRs i have.

Other problems include minor problems like programmes not able to shut down properly unless I force stop it using the task manager.

You still haven't answered whether your drives are in Ultra DMA mode.

OK weird results.
I ran memtest with 2 setups, once with both rams in and another time with them switching slots.

One of the times, I get no problem. The other time, I'd get an error in Test 5.

And Whats ultra DMA mode? me noob don't know <_<
