Creative MuVo² FM 5GB CF Removal cccp Sep 3rd, 04, 11:14 AM #1

By Visionary

Creative has just launched the MuVo² FM 5GB player powered by Seagate's new 1-inch ST1 5GB, 3600rpm hard drive with RunOn Technology. Of course, we are very interested to know if this drive can be used in digicams like what the Hitachi 4GB Microdrive has been able to achieve therefore we take it apart and test it out.

Ok, I've been doing some reading on this all over the 'net, and have some questions and comments.

This can be done with the 5gb Rio Carbon as well, which some Best Buys in the U.S. have in stock. People are having very limited success with installing flash memory cards in the Carbon after taking the Seagate drive out though. Some people suspect that it's a case of the carbon only working with flash cards that are capable of True IDE mode, which not many flash cards are, but there's no confirmation on that yet. It'd be cool to find out if that's the case with the MuVe2 FM too.

There has been one person who claims to have taken the 5gb drive out of their Carbon, and installed their 4gb Microdrive from an iPod (the fixed drives that don't work in cameras). They said that after they installed the Carbon firmware on the Microdrive, they took it back out and put it in their camera AND IT WORKED! Anybody that can confirm that this works with a Carbon OR MuVo2 FM will get my vote for president

the firmware lock is already implemented on the later batches of MuVo2 4GB...
Wonder why didn't they implement on the 5GB products...

I'm actually interested in the MuVo2 FM as a music player.

Do you have a closeup picture of the front?
Is the selection button much improved over the earlier models?
What is the built in radio like? Good reception?

Does it come packaged with a case & what is the remote that is mentioned?

Is the menu system different with any autoplaylist creation?

I'm looking to get one but not much info about yet.

What do you think of the player. The only other I would be considering is the Rio Carbon but seeing as that doesn't have an FM tuner or removable battery the MuVo2 FM is my main choice (like look of the Carbon though).

I have a 1.5GB MuVo2 so am confortable with size but the menu selector isn't great.

Would appreciate any advice/opinion.
