Singapore, August 26, 2008 – An online fund-raising campaign has been started to enable Singapore\'s top cyber-athletes compete in the upcoming Grand Finals of the World Cyber Games (WCG) \'08 in Cologne, Germany. This fundraising campaign is crucial after gamers were stranded without sponsorship even though they qualified at the National Finals to represent Singapore. Three of these Singaporean champions are even medal hopefuls in Cologne.

These gamers are already proven world class players. They just need a little help financially to be able to prove it once again this year.

Bringing a medal back home would be the first step of showing that Singapore has got what it takes to shine in this arena. Perhaps the government would be more interested to take gaming seriously after that.

However, this first step, sadly, has to come from the public and community people. If no one make a move, then nothing will happen.

Similarly if there is a world class overclocker in VR community, I'm sure VR would have tried to raise funds for him to compete in the international arena. Would overclocking have a future in SG? I guess it also feels good to see one of your community people representing SG on the international stage.

Analogy is not right, our world class OCer did not solicit funds from public but instead fed his passion from own or thru' his trade.

Not against the Asian WCG winners here. Hope they get their needed funds and if they can afford it, by all means self-fund.

the fundamental issue is that if the govt and the mindset of all is not even supportive or conducive for athletes to compete in sporting events, how can 1 even expect locals to aspire to be athletes?

The gahment should stop sponsoring the foreign talents and help these bunch of players , why are we the one raising the fund? Even we got the medals , the gahment will borrow the honor or just brush it aside. So if I am a good player , I should go other countries where sponsors are more willing to help.
