2008 Bmw M3: V8 At Heart international Apr 5th, 07, 02:21 PM #1 (permalink)

Like it or not, after fifteen years of inline-sixes in the M3, the time has come to move on. The E92 M3 needs to compete against the 420-hp Audi RS4, so it needs more than the previous M3's 3.2 liters of displacement. BMW says cylinders larger than 500cc are less than ideal, so it had no choice but to go to a V-8.

Luckily for purists, BMW's M Division doesn't believe in turbocharging - they feel that it just adds weight and fuel consumption. Their solution is, instead, to extract power from engines by building them to sustain speeds heretofore enjoyed only by your trusty Osterizer.

8400 rpm, that is, making it the fastest high-volume V-8 in the world. And all that revving works - the 3999-cc, 90-degree cross-plane-crank V-8 frappés out 420 hp @ 8300 rpm and 295 lb-ft @ 3900 rpm. BMW hasn't finalized its U.S. M3 specifications - the 420 number is actually German horsepower, Pferdestärke, which is the equivalent of 414 U.S. horsepower. (Our horses are slightly stronger - they eat Wheaties.)

The engine, however, is rated at 309 kW, which is the same as the Audi RS4. Audi managed to certify that engine to both 420 PS (German) and 420 hp (US). We suspect BMW will do the same, because the M3's engine is nothing more than the latest bomb dropped in the German horsepower war, landing right on top of the RS4's pretty red V-8.

A few important points with this new V8 unit....

1. Last year we marveled that Audi squeezed 420 horsepower out of only 4.2 liters. BMW has now squeezed the same amount out of only 4.0.

2. Last year we couldn't believe the Audi V-8 revved to 8250 rpm. BMW's dyno chart doesn't stop until 8400.

3. Last year we thought it was amazing that the RS4's power peak was at a lofty 7800 rpm. That seems like peanuts, now - the M3's engine makes peak power at 8300.

4. Last year we all oohed and aahed that the RS4's V-8 makes 90 percent of its peak torque over a 5350-rpm range. (From 2250 to 7600 rpm). Now, BMW's V-8 adds 400 rpm to that already unbelievable spread - it does the same from 2500 to 8250 rpm.

by calculating engine load based on parameters like engine rpm, intake air temperature and pressure, throttle position, and VANOS position. The computer also monitors the resistance across the spark plug gap to identify detonation and misfiring.

We won't be getting it in the U.S., but elsewhere, the M3 will have BMW's new brake energy regeneration system, which sounds more complex and hybrid-y than it actually is. It's a brilliant, but simple, system that decouples the alternator when it's not needed. And by favoring running the alternator in overrun and under braking, the system helps fuel economy while simultaneously making more power available under acceleration.

The system does require a new type of battery - an AGM, or absorbent glass mat battery, which can better cope with the increased charging and discharging it will experience working with the regeneration system. There's been no word yet on whether there are any drawbacks to this type of battery, but we suspect that might be one reason we're not getting the system.

If there are any drawbacks to having an eight-pot M3, we haven't seen any evidence yet. We'll miss the previous engine's screaming, inline-six wail, for sure. But on paper, at least, the new V-8 looks like a win-win proposition.

We expect more information on the M3 to be released at the 2007 New York Auto Show, even though the car won't be there in the flesh.

I hope despite the larger engine...I hope handling is not affected by the heavier engine...

but i think the performance of the M3 will be too close to the M5 or M6? since its juz 2 cylinders less.

Take the weight aspect of the M5...M5 is a performance and luxury...consider M6 as a natural "near supercar" while the M3 is just a hard and fast coupe...BMW here is giving a range to suit different people with different needs...obvious money has been brushed off side....

The new M3, i had hoped for a faster one. But i think the key element in this car above all is, the weight. It is lightweight. The beauty of this new m3 lies in the very fact that its prodigous pullin power is basically mid-high end. Dont expect this car to be a traffic light superstar. Its only above 100 where this car will leave many cars in the dust. My 335i twin turbo can be chipped to exceed more than the torque of 420nm on the m3 but it will never be an M3. The new m3 is simply a new benchmark for many cars. 6 yrs of international awards on the S54 engine, this new BMW E92 S65B40 V8 M3 engine simply wont disappoint.

P.S : International, you beat me to this posting on BMW. I think you are more hardcore than me. But goddan, look at the internals of the V8 in the engine on the link i provided. Engineering marvel these germans.
